Yunnan Minzu University is a comprehensive university that trains senior professionals from all ethnic groups. It is a provincial key university jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the Yunnan Provincial People's Government. The university was founded on August 1, 1951, formerly known as Yunnan Minzu College. It is one of the earliest ethnic higher education institutions established in the People's Republic of China. It was renamed Yunnan Minzu University in April 2003, and has gone through more than 70 years of history.
Since its establishment, the school has always been highly valued and cared for by the leaders of the Party and the country. Party and state leaders Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, and Xi Jinping have met with representatives of teachers and students of our school; Zhou Enlai, Peng Dehuai, Chen Yi, Panchen Erdeni Qoigyi Gyaltsen, Li Lanqing, Li Tieying, Simayi Aimaiti and others have visited the school in person, caring about the growth and progress of teachers and students of all ethnic groups and the construction and development of the school. The first president and vice president of the school were General Zhou Baozhong and General Zhang Chong, vice chairmen of the Yunnan Provincial People's Government. Since the establishment of the school, a group of academic celebrities, such as Professor Ma Yao, a famous ethnologist, historian, and educator, Professor Wang Ningsheng, a famous ethnologist and archaeologist, Professor He Yaohua, a famous historian and ethnologist, Professor He Shaoying, a famous ethnologist and anthropologist, and Professor Xie Benshu, a famous historian, have become the founders and backbone of the school's teaching, scientific research, and discipline construction and development.
The university is now a comprehensive institution with distinct educational features, covering nine disciplines: economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, management, and art. It emphasizes both arts and sciences, with strengths in ethnology, sociology, ethnic languages, and Southeast Asian and South Asian cultures. The university offers 3 postdoctoral research stations, 2 first-level doctoral programs, 17 first-level master’s programs, 22 professional master’s programs, and 76 undergraduate majors. It has 20 national and 21 provincial first-class undergraduate major sites, with 41 majors in the "Double 10,000 Plan." There are also 13 key provincial disciplines. The university hosts several national-level teaching and research platforms, including those focused on ethnic sports, ideological and political work, and bio-based materials technology.
The university currently has about 34,000 undergraduates, masters, doctoral students and international students, and more than 30,000 continuing education students. There are 1,821 faculty members, including 217 senior professional titles, 429 associate senior professional titles, 600 intermediate professional titles, 312 junior and below professional titles, 638 doctoral degrees and 889 master's degrees. The university currently has 1 social science leader in the National Special Support Program for High-level Talents, 2 young top talents, 1 national talent, 3 experts enjoying special allowances from the State Council, 1 cultural celebrity in the national propaganda and cultural system and "four batches" of talents, 1 cross-century outstanding talent of the Ministry of Education, 4 chief experts of major projects of the National Social Science Fund, 118 people selected in the Yunnan Province "Xingdian Talent Support Program", 8 experts enjoying special allowances from the Yunnan Provincial Government, 4 outstanding professional and technical talents with outstanding contributions in Yunnan Province, 29 young and middle-aged academic and technical leaders and reserve talents in Yunnan Province, and 1 "four batches" of talents in Yunnan Province.
The school covers an area of 2,545 mu, with a building area of 900,000 square meters. It has more than 10 national and provincial research institutions and talent training bases, 1 ethnic museum, and nearly 20,000 cultural relics. The library has more than 2.4 million paper books of various types and nearly 1.3 million electronic books. "Journal of Yunnan University for Minzu (Philosophy and Social Sciences Edition)" is included in the "Comprehensive Humanities and Social Sciences" core journals of the "Overview of Chinese Core Journals" 2020 edition (i.e. 9th edition). It is a source journal of the Chinese Social Science Citation Index (CSSCI), a core journal of the Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences Comprehensive Evaluation AMI, a core journal of Chinese science and technology, and an "Excellent Journal" of the First Yunnan Provincial News Publishing, Radio, Film and Television Award. "Journal of Yunnan University for Minzu (Natural Science Edition)" has been selected as a source journal of the "China Science and Technology Paper Statistics Source Journal" (China Science and Technology Core Journal) since 2012, and has been rated as an excellent science and technology journal of Chinese universities and a characteristic science and technology journal of Chinese universities.
The university pays attention to foreign cooperation and exchanges, and is an important window for the country and Yunnan to open up to the outside world. Since its establishment, more than 100,000 heads of state, dignitaries, experts, scholars and international friends from more than 100 countries and regions, including Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, former US Secretary of State Dr. Kissinger, King Harald V of Norway, President Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam, Princess Sirindhorn of Thailand, have visited Yunnan Minzu University and given good comments. The university began to recruit foreign students in 1981 and foreign master's students in 1992. It is one of the earliest universities in Yunnan Province to recruit foreign students and teach Chinese as a foreign language. It has established cooperative and exchange relations with nearly 100 universities or academic institutions in more than 30 countries, including the United States, Norway, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, etc. Many foreign dignitaries, scholars, journalists, etc., such as the "Delegation of 28 Foreign Envoys to China" and the "20-Country Press Corps", have visited the university to learn about Yunnan's ethnic culture and policies, leaving a deep impression.
To better serve the training of ethnic minority talents, in 2013, based on the original preparatory education college, the Yunnan Higher Education Ethnic Minority Preparatory Education Base was established in the school, building a bridge for ethnic minority students to higher education and cultivating and supplying high-quality ethnic minority undergraduate students to colleges and universities inside and outside the province.
In December 2014, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Education designated Yunnan Minzu University as a China-ASEAN Education and Training Center. By December 2016, it was approved to establish the Lancang-Mekong Vocational Education Base. Over time, the university has set up 10 training bases at border ports with Myanmar, Vietnam, and Laos, as well as four bases in Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It also operates in Kunming and Dehong, training over 70,000 people from Mekong countries.
To expand its vocational education efforts, the university launched the Lancang-Mekong International Vocational College, a vocational education alliance, and a research institute. These initiatives support multi-level vocational cooperation and national strategies. The base's work is part of the "Five-Year Action Plans" for Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (2018-2022, 2023-2027) and is recognized as a national-level foreign education cooperation project.
In the future, the school will continue to focus on intensive development, constantly explore and build a modern university system, take root in Yunnan, face the whole country, radiate South Asia and Southeast Asia, and strive to move towards a high-level ethnic university, a model school for ethnic unity, and a model school for "three styles" construction under the background of the country's "Double First-Class" construction.
