Hunan University

Hunan University (HNU; 湖南大学), a public university located in Yuelu, Changsha, Hunan, China, is affiliated with the Ministry of Education and holds prestigious positions in various national and international projects such as Project 211, Project 985, and the Double First-Class initiative.

HNU traces its origins back to 976 CE, when it was founded as Yuelu Academy during the Song Dynasty. Over the centuries, the institution evolved significantly, transitioning into the Hunan Institute of Higher Education in 1903 and later becoming Hunan University. It was designated a national university in 1937, becoming the National Hunan University, the 15th national university in China. The university experienced interruptions during the Battle of Changsha (1938–1941) but resumed normal operations after the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, with the university name calligraphed by Mao Zedong in 1950.

In the 1960s, HNU was placed under the jurisdiction of the First Ministry of Machinery Industry. The university's status as a National Key University was reaffirmed in 1978. Since then, HNU has continuously developed, becoming a part of Project 211 in 1996, Project 985 in 2000, and later included in the Double First-Class Construction initiative in 2017, which aims to develop world-class universities in China. HNU became home to the National Supercomputing Center of Changsha in 2010, the first of its kind in central China. In 2011, it joined the Excellence League, an alliance of leading Chinese engineering universities, and became a member of the BRICS Universities League in 2015.

As of 2024, Hunan University ranks within the top 200 universities globally across several rankings:

U.S. News & World Report ranks HNU 119th globally, 22nd in Asia, and 12th in China. Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) places HNU at 151st globally. The university also performs strongly in research, ranking 45th globally in the Nature Index Research Leaders 2024 and 105th in the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2024 based on the volume of high-quality publications.HNU is known for producing significant research, particularly in engineering and natural sciences. In 2022, 32 of its faculty members were listed among Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers, placing the university 33rd globally.With a rich history spanning more than a millennium, Hunan University continues to be a major player in China's higher education and research landscape.
